Let’s Look -organizing for the new year

Ohh this is a great topic for the first of the year. I definitely see January as that fresh start I look forward to, and to kick it all off I want everything neat and organized.

The first thing I do is take down and pack away all the Christmas decorations. I love decorating for Christmas, and enjoying it through the holiday season, so this part is always a little sad.

I loved nothing more than spending the evenings and weekends in my house with my little family, and probably could’ve used a few more weeks of holiday cheer.

Once Christmas is put away, I tackle a few projects like organizing the bookshelves, cleaning the fridge, quick tasks, but can make a big difference.

In years past, I tried to do excessive cleaning and organizing, like washing baseboards, organizing cupboards, tackling the linen closet, things that that really became unrealistic in the amount of time I have off for the holidays, plus juggling a toddler in the mix.

Several years ago it dawned on me that the approximate 500 days, joking, sort of, in January are actually a great time to get those types of projects done. We have no events going on, we can’t do yard work, and it really is just the perfect month to hunker down, stay in, and take care of that list of projects. So I make a list and dedicate weekend time to get it done. This year I even started a few things before the holidays, like purging closets and toys, things I would typically wait until after Christmas.

Another way I like to organize, is sitting down with my new planner and fill out all the birthdays, big events I know are coming up, projects we want to get done at the house, and map out dinner menus. Then I journal out my personal goals for the year. These things really makes me feel refreshed and excited for new things ahead.

My son's birth story

As we approach my son’s third birthday, I thought I’d share his birth story. Yes, it’s cliche, but the day he was born, is one I will never forget, and I think so fondly of it, despite a few unexpected turns.  I had a very uneventful and healthy pregnancy...zero morning sickness, good energy levels. Except for the fact that I had a protruding stomach, felt a little off balance, had difficulty breathing and  my ears plugged every day during the last trimester, I felt great. I do credit a lot of that due to the fact I was able to workout the whole time.  My due date was June 5, and I started maternity leave one week prior.  I wanted as much vacation and sick leave in the books, but taking just one week was stressful because I felt like I had a lot to do still - finalize the nursery, prepare more freezer meals, clean everything again, and I even made some of those padsicles for post partum healing. My first weekend off and up to my due date, I kept saying, “the baby doe...
Here I am back in the blogging world after quite a hiatus. I loved my old blog, but as time goes on life changes. Although somewhat fun to look back on, that blog reflected a former life, a time of trying to fit in, to find my voice. I didn't really cringe at all when I hit the delete button and six years  of blogging disappeared. Now, I'm a 30- something woman. I'm more settled and I need an outlet. It did not help that my former profession was in the writing world so my energies and love of writing went to that. Now, I get to write for fun, for me, more intentional. My life is full of family, work and maintaining and fixing up a house. I love to cook and read and try new things. This blog will reflect a lot of those things and hopefully much, much more. So, welcome to my little corner.

Birth story Part 2

It was so nice to be unhooked from the pitocin and monitors. It was also wonderful to be able to eat something. The nurse said I could go walking, so I put my regular clothes back on, and when she walked back in she alarmingly stated, “ you can’t leave!” My husband and I laughingly assured her we were just walking the hospital premises, and off we went.  We walked outside for awhile, then returned to my room. I live in a small town, and we ran into an acquaintance whose spouse was in the hospital. He looked at us and said, “oh, I thought you would’ve had the baby by now.” Yes, you and me both.  By the time we returned, the nurse who checked me in the night prior was there. She told us she didn’t think the baby’s head was facing the right direction? I may be unclear, on those exact details, but she said that could be contributing to my lack of progress. She set me up laying in different positions to try moving the head and later told me it was working. She also gave me the medi...
